Cafe Review: Fuel Coffee and Food

Why? This is more of a city worker's establishment than a kid's cafe. So it's really just a recommendation on where to get an amazing coffee when you're in town and on the hop.

Last time I was at a certain cafe in Westfield, I had to pay $4.80 for a small decaf latte. I know, the decaf thing is all a bit 'why bother?'...but as a reforming caffeine addict, I've decided to choose unleaded for all coffee after my first (strong) latte of the day.
I have nothing against the cafes in Westfield (and in fact, I'd like to mention one in particular, Madcap Cafe, which is not the $4.80 cafe I'm referring to. Madcap Cafe employs people with mental illness, and they do a sensational job. Very worth supporting). But back to my point. $4.80 is a lot. There's another option, located just across Moorabool St.

Fuel Cafe is a little slice of Campos coffee-serving heaven. From the tattooed staff, grungy fit-out and bikes hanging on the wall, it's worryingly hip for G-town. It's small but always buzzing, and the staff look as though they are genuinely having a good time. The joint definitely does good coffee, but it also serves great sandwiches, tea and cakes.

If you've got the kids, you can either find a spot at the back, sit inside at the window or (like me with a rather inconvenient double pram) just sit outside in the laneway on the milk crates. So very Melbourne right now.

Oh - and their decaf coffee is sensational! Very hard to tell the difference. And it gives you a bit more change from a fiver.

Hi Janet, thanks for the fantastic mention. With two young kids of our own, it was important for us to make sure Fuel wasn't too precious for our younger customers! The furniture is robust, we'll always accomodate prams and we've welcomed many 'groups' over the years! We even have colouring pages and crayons to keep little minds interested. Oh, and bubba-chinos and warm hot chocs are one of our specialties! No snob value here! Thanks again, Greg & Georgie @ Fuel
